Bridging the Gap

Classroom support and academic assistance for students of rural schools

cl1.jpg

Research has shown that a lack of interest in education and an inability to keep up academically are among the most common reasons for school dropout in India (Garg, Chowdhury and Sheikh, 2023).

Additionally, anecdotal evidence gathered from our partner schools points to another critical factor: parents often choose to withdraw their children if they believe the child’s performance doesn’t justify the expense. Many parents prefer their children to enter the workforce early, viewing this as a way for them to gain practical skills and financial independence. With urban and affluent students having easy access to tutoring and extra support, rural children are often left behind due to a lack of resources.

devLIFT's Bridging the Gap project strives to counter these challenges by providing rural students with additional academic support. Through tutoring and supplementary learning in social sciences for the students of our partner schools.

Our focus is on improving academic performance, helping students excel in exams, which is crucial for their continued education. By helping the pupils improve their performance and engage more with their studies, we aim to reduce dropout rates and increase their future educational and employment opportunities.

As we work in tandem with the normal classroom learning, we are able to give more time to each individual student and come up with a way of learning that is catered to their strongest suits. It also ensures that students feel comfortable clarifying their doubts and develop confidence in their knowledge of difficult topics.

We have already observed a marked improvement in the performance of students participating in our tutoring sessions, with the overall class average increasing in the half-yearly and then the end-of-term final examinations in the inaugural session 2024-45.

Additionally, students have responded positively and have expressed that the extra support has been invaluable, helping them grasp challenging concepts more effectively and feel more prepared for exams.

Building confident communicators through additional English language lessons

Public speaking is another vital skill that boosts self-assurance and prepares students for real-world challenges. To develop this, we incorporate debate training in our sessions, which has not only helped students become stronger speakers but has also taught them how to build logical arguments, analyze different perspectives, and think critically about any given topic.

The approach we adopted was to facilitate the development of a genuine interest and love for the activity and thus build an association between positive feelings and a learning process as difficult as mastering another language. A language like English, which isn't all that accessible or oft-encountered in the home-environments of our students. And as we've been able to observe, our solution has been rather effective.

In the machinations of the modern world, the ability to communicate effectively in English is not just a skill—it’s a gateway to better opportunities, higher employability, and greater confidence. Recognizing this, devLIFT is working to make our students better communicators, by helping students strengthen their English-speaking abilities.

Classroom learning often leaves much to be desired and the academic subject of English differs greatly from the practical skill of English communication. To target the latter, we hold focused group sessions with 8 to 10 students at a time on a daily basis, creating a comfortable and engaging environment where every student receives individual attention and practice.

The impact is already visible, with students gradually using more English even during their lectures, asking their doubts in English with growing confidence.

Want to support a child's education?

If you're interested in knowing more and joining hands in our efforts,

feel free to contact us.

In rural communities, a family's financial situation often determines whether a child can continue their education or must drop out. Many parents, particularly in economically disadvantaged areas, deprioritize education—especially true for daughters—when faced with tuition costs. The opportunity to study becomes a luxury, leaving many bright, motivated students without a pathway to complete their schooling.

devLIFT’s Nirmal Tara Bright Minds Scholarship aims to bridge this financial barrier by providing scholarships to academically deserving students from underprivileged backgrounds who are at risk of discontinuing their schooling due to financial hardship. By connecting generous donors directly with students in need, devLIFT ensures that each donation has an immediate, life-changing impact.

Through this ongoing scholarship program, we’re committed to leveling the educational playing field, allowing students to attend and thrive in our partner schools. With the support of our donors, we’re creating a direct line to brighter futures, empowering students to achieve their potential regardless of their economic background.
